Galeria de Arte Contemporânea + Restaurante
Recife, 2015
Interiors 2 @ Federal University of Pernambuco
This project is a renovation proposal for an existing building and aims to address a recurring problem in the city of Recife: the conversion of single-family housing into establishments for commercial use or service. For the project, I chosed a modernist residence from the 1970s, designed by the architects Wandenkolk Tinôco and Enio Eskinazi, located in the central area of Recife. Currently, this building houses a commercial establishment and the changes made by this establishment use were be disregarded.
For the new use, I sought a program compatible with the urban reality of the area and with the dimensions of the building. Since the area is full of business people, a restaurant has been proposed to cater for workers and customers. Still, aiming to enhance the architecture of this building, which is one of the few remaining modernist examples in the neighborhood, a complementary use to the restaurant was proposed: an art gallery where modern architecture meets contemporary art.
The proposal seeks to preserve as much as possible the original setting of the residence so that the new use allows both contact with the past - when walking around the rooms - as with the present - while appreciating contemporary art and food. The organization of the exhibition areas follows the spatial logic of the original floor plan, coordinating the amount and kind of seats as well as the dimensions of the art work with the rooms' dimensions.
