Mulheres sem Cabeça e Outras Ocorrências: Roteiros para a Arte Pública

Porto, 2019

Ongoing project

"Headless Women and Other Events: Tours for Public Art" is an art project that examines permanent public art - namely, sculptures and monuments. By reflecting on the representations of the feminine in Porto’s public art, this project problematizes how these historical objects still affect passersby day to day living. The statuary seen in the public spaces of many cities commonly follows an essentialist model of representation, perpetuating both past and present narratives that insist in the objectification of women. Through many itenerations, such as the map Headless Women in Public Art, in digital, paper and fabric versions, Tours for public art, the Headless Women in Public Art website (https://headlesswomeninpublic.art), the Nomand Sculptures, posters, collages and embroidered illustrations, this project invites people to take part of a project that aims to influence a diversification of women’s stories in the public space, to provide an exchange of ideas on gender and citizenship relations in Porto, and stimulate a broader understanding of the interrelations between the concepts of public art and city today.
