Rua das Doze Casas

Porto, 2017

Studio @ University of Porto

This photographic series was the first attempt to get closer to Rua das Doze Casas, in Bonfim neighborhood, the street of my first home in Porto. My adaptation to the city of Porto was quite difficult. I felt that I did not belong here and built walls that made it impossible for me to enjoy my new context.

Rua das Doze Casas constitute of a shortcut road between Marquês Metro Station and Rua da Alegria and it gets very busy during rush hour. Understanding this 40m long street whether visually or spatially was challenging due to its winding and fragmented aspect. It is not possible from any point of the street to fully observe it from beginning to end. To understand this street more broadly, I drew a memory map of it and compared with its floor plan.  Both maps had the interruptions in the sidewalks and the barriers caused by the different setbacks of the old and newer buildings. These differences formed “cutouts” in the architecture, which often constitute physical and visual barriers (blind walls).
